The Year in Review
In this tough economic year, our work became more important than ever. With the help of 1,500 volunteers, we were able to complete 112 homes and 7 nonprofit facilities at a total market value of $1.2 million in FY2009. While our efforts are most plainly expressed by the numbers, a lot happens throughout the year that increases our capacity and allows us to do greater and better work. As the year winds down, we thought we’d take a look back on our greatest moments of 2009 (in no particular order):
- Seal of Excellence: RTMC was awarded the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organization’s Seal of Excellence for successfully completing the Standards of Excellence® certification program. Of the 24,000 nonprofits in Maryland, 84 have received this award, and we are one of only 10 to have received this award in Montgomery County.
- Choice Hotels Partnership : Rebuilding Together has developed a new national relationship with Choice Hotels; Choice will sponsor and help execute 20 rebuilding projects over the next year with affiliates across the country. RTMC hosted the launch of this partnership by renovating Stepping Stones Shelter, a transitional housing nonprofit, with the help of over 100 Choice volunteers on September 11th.
- RT Honors: In March of this year, RTMC honored veteran volunteer David Merrick of Merrick Design & Build, Inc. David began his relationship with RTMC in 1991 and has been a House Captain on numerous projects and served as a member of the RTMC Board of Directors. He currently serves as a liaison to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and is Chairman of our Corporate Advisory Council.
- RTMC Golf Classic: Presented by TW Perry, Monument Bank, and Bart & Associates, October’s RTMC Golf Classic raised over $84,000. As our largest fundraiser of the year, the golf tournament goes a long way in supporting the operational costs of our office.
- Spring and Fall Rebuilding Days: On April 25 and 26, volunteers from across Montgomery County came together to rebuild 32 homes and 5 nonprofit facilities. On October 24, four more homes were completed. Many thanks to all of our sponsors, especially our first time house sponsors Dakota Consulting, Inc, Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Washington Grove United Methodist Church, and Raffa, Inc.
- Big Train Picnic: In June we hosted a picnic at a Bethesda Big Train baseball game to thank our House Captains, Ambassadors, and Area Coordinators for all their hard work in successfully completing another amazing Spring Rebuilding Day.
- New Equipment: We purchased a new truck through a County Council grant and Hearts and Hands donated a trailer. Both are invaluable for getting supplies and materials to the job site.
- New AmeriCorps Members: AmeriCorps members Lane Van Buren and Chris Somers joined us in August for 11 months of service. Their enthusiasm and optimism bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the organization.
- RTMC About Town: The Washington Post covered our Choice Hotels sponsored rebuilding project. One of our veteran House Captains, Jerry Liu, from DC Liu Contractor, Inc, was featured in AARP’s The Magazine. And our very own Board President Bob Quinn and his wife Liz were featured in Bethesda Magazine.
- Community Warehouse: Through Home Depot’s Gifts In-Kind Program, RTMC was able to open our Community Warehouse which houses new or gently used building materials and building supplies. The Community Warehouse is a great resource for our own projects, but the contents are also available for use by other nonprofits in the community.
