Fixing a house There are many different Volunteer positions. Review the following list and see what you are most suited for.

 House Captains

House captain and homeownerHouse Captains are the key to our success. Their job is to act as the Foreman or Director at a site. The House Captain is the one person in charge on Rebuilding Together work day and is responsible for planning and managing a safe and quality project that will be a meaningful and enjoyable experience for volunteers and homeowners.

House Captain Responsibilities

  • Before Rebuilding Together Day
    • Recruit a Co-Captain
    • Assists the house captain in organizing the site and volunteers
    • Recruit a House Ambassador (Manages the homeowners expectations and communicates with them about what to expect and what will be accomplished. Ensures completion of all homeowner waivers)
    • Attend mandatory House captain Meeting
    • Visit your assigned site to determine the work to be done. Get to know the family and the house ahead of time. (Look for additional safety improvements that can be made in and around the house)
    • Prioritize and organize the work to be completed in advance of Project day
    • Determine the materials and supplies you need for your site
    • Assist in getting large donations (doors, windows)
    • Order and pick up supplies at Home Depot in ADVANCE of Project Day.
    • Coordinate and arrange for any necessary pre-work
  • On Rebuilding Together Day
    • Conduct an orientation meeting (PEP Rally) with all volunteers first thing on the workday
    • Clearly assign jobs and team leaders to all volunteers
    • Be a leader NOT a worker. Direct all the volunteers, Stressing safety and quality
    • Conduct a final walk through with the homeowner and House Ambassador at the end of the day and complete all paperwork
  • After Rebuilding Together Project Day
    • Complete any unfinished work at your site
    • Complete and send in the House Captain Evaluation
    • Attend wrap up meeting
  • Attributes
    • Knowledge of or skill in renovation/repair work
    • Organized
    • Able to direct others
    • Belief in the mission of Rebuilding Together 
    • Strong communication skills
    • Able to manage homeowner and volunteer expectations
 House Ambassadors

House ambassador and homeownerThe House Ambassador plays an essential role by representing the interests of the homeowner during Project Day. House Ambassadors get to know the homeowner, are sensitive to the homeowner's needs and feelings, and support and guide the homeowner throughout the process. The House ambassador should be the individual who makes all contacts with the House Captain, Co-Captain and volunteers.

House Ambassador Responsibilities:

  • Before Rebuilding Together Day
    • Request the participation of able-bodied homeowners and family members on Project Day.
    • Help the homeowner fill out the Homeowner Release/Agreement Form.
    • Help the homeowner to prepare the house and pack va
    • Be observant, noting any behavior on the part of volunteers that may be upsetting to the homeowner.
    • Make arrangements with the homeowner to arrive ear
    • Put valuables away prior to Project Day.
  • On Rebuilding Together Project Day
    • Make sure that all volunteers are wearing a name tag on the front and back of their T-shirt.
    • When necessary, explain the need to cease activities that the homeowner does not need undertaken.
    • Be observant, noting any behavior on the part of the volunteers that may be upsetting to the homeowner.
    • Make arrangements with the homeowner to arrive early, before the volunteer team, on Project Day. Note any differences at the site that may be in conflict with prior arrangements.
    • Be the last to leave when the repairs are done.
    • Help the homeowner thank all the volunteers.
    • Help the Homeowner to fill out the Homeowner Satisfaction Form.
  • After Rebuilding Together Project Day
    • Help to complete the House Captain Evaluation.
    • Return the Homeowner Satisfaction Form to the House Captain.
    • Attend Wrap Up Meeting
 Area Coordinators

Area coordinator conferring with homeownerArea Coordinators are the keys to the House Captains' success. Their job is to act as the Superintendent for five sites. The Area Coordinator is the point of contact for each of the House Captains he is to support and supervise. The Area Coordinator ensures that each House captain is planning and managing a safe and quality project that will be a meaningful and enjoyable experience for volunteers and homeowners.

Area Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Before Rebuilding Together Day
    • Attend Area Coordinator and House Captain meetings
    • Exchange phone/cell/pager numbers with House Captains
    • Visit sites with respective House Captains
    • Facilitate House Captain form submission
    • Familiarize yourself with Homeowner circumstances and site conditions
    • Assist House Captain with purchasing system forms
    • Review House Captain forms for approval
  • On Rebuilding Together Day
    • Visit each house morning, noon and afternoon
    • Be readily available to respond to House Captain emergencies
    • Collect necessary forms and remind House Captains to bring their evaluations to Wrap-Up Meeting
    • Deliver T-shirts to houses
    • Confirm publicity fliers have been distributed
  • After Rebuilding Together Day
    • Attend Wrap-Up Meeting
